Educators around the country are gearing up for Common Core State Standards implementation this school year by attending conferences, reading trade books, and familiarizing themselves with curriculum frameworks. Soon it will be back-to-school season and plans will be put into action as teaching the Common Core becomes a reality. ASCD is offering two new, one-hour webinars as part of their Common Core State Standards series this summer at no cost. Be sure to mark your calendars with these upcoming dates:
Shifting from the Elephant in the Room to Ownership of the Common Core State Standards: A Capacity-Building Implementation Plan by Nicole Clifton. Monday, July 22, 3:00 p.m. eastern time Participants will gain an understanding of building internal capacity for implementing the Common Core State Standards as well as understanding their role in facilitating implementation. Participants will discover best practices for successful implementation through planning job-embedded professional learning, determining a timeline for implementation, and determining a plan for getting assistance. This webinar will also focus on exploring powerful strategies that will demonstrate how to monitor and adjust implementation plans during the implementation period.
Equipping English Language Learners to Access Common Core Mathematics by Maria Montalvo-Balbed and Denise Huddlestun. Wednesday, August 14, 3:00 p.m. eastern time The Common Core State Standards present both challenges and opportunities for English language learners (ELLs) to become active participants in the mathematics classroom. The Standards for Mathematical Practice focus on active engagement that allows students to become mathematically proficient through a variety of language-rich experiences. For ELLs, those demands require teachers to understand the linguistic demands of academic language and Common Core mathematics. Through this webinar, participants will be able to understand the language demands of Common Core mathematics by engaging in a mathematical task, identifying the language demands of the task, and determining literacy practices to equip ELLs to successfully complete the task.
In addition, ASCD provides archived webinars in the Common Core State Standards series, which are accessible online for free at any time. Past webinars cover topics including text complicity and the Common Core standards, assessment shifts, exceeding speaking standards, and helping English Language Learners transition to the standards. These titles and many more are available for you to access at your convenience.
