“You don’t have to like every classmate, but you must honor their humanity.”

That is the key to “deep learning” according to national bullying expert Barbara Coloroso on this episode of ASCD Learn Teach Lead Radio. Hating, hoarding, and harming, are tearing apart our schools and our communities, but Coloroso’s vision for proactively creating communities of deep caring shines a necessary light on her approach to bully prevention.

But just what is deep caring? Coloroso explains that if bullying is a conscious, willful, and deliberate act intended to harm, where one gets pleasure from somebody else’s pain, deep caring is a feeling that one must relieve someone else’s suffering.

Barbara Coloroso is an international best-selling author and for the past 40 years an internationally recognized speaker and consultant on parenting, teaching, school discipline, positive school climate, bullying, grieving, nonviolent conflict resolution, and restorative justice. She is the author of the upcoming ASCD book, Classroom Bullying Look-Fors.” Mike Janatovich is the principal of Harmon Middle School in Aurora, Ohio, and an ASCD Emerging Leader.
