Educational Coaches: What They Do, What They Don’t, How You Benefit

Connect, accept, and be trustworthy. These are the qualities of a successful coach, according to Cathy A. Toll on this episode of ASCD Learn Teach Lead Radio. Educational coaching is a powerful way to support teaching that is often confused with mentoring. Cathy Toll supports teacher learning by guiding educational coaches, professional learning teams, and administrative leaders.

Toll has served as a teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and as a reading specialist, curriculum coordinator, school principal, director of literacy research and development, grant director, the state department of education consultant, educational coach and author of Educational Coaching: A Partnership for Problem Solving. Host Rachael George is the principal of Sandy Grade School in the Oregon Trail School District and an ASCD Emerging Leader.
